Bistro 360 in RosslynToday through next Monday, more than a dozen Arlington restaurants will be participating in Northern Virginia Restaurant Week.

The weeklong event is being organized by the Reston, Loudoun, Arlington and Prince William Chambers of Commerce, with more than 60 restaurants participating across Northern Virginia. First Lady of Virginia Dorothy McAuliffe kicked off restaurant week during a ceremony at Jaleo (2250 Crystal Drive) in Crystal City this morning.

Unlike D.C. Restaurant Week, which involves fixed lunch and dinner prices, restaurants participating in the Northern Virginia event are able to set their own “value price” — provided it ends in .16.

Here are the Arlington restaurants participating:

  • Bistro 360
  • Bracket Room
  • Cinnabar by Hyatt
  • Cityhouse Hyatt Arlington
  • Crystal City Sports Pub
  • Il Forno Ristorante
  • Jaleo
  • Kona Grill

  • Lyon Hall
  • McCormick & Schmick’
  • Morton’s
  • O’Malley’s Pub & Fresh Kitchen

Restaurant week logoWinter Restaurant Week is already underway, and it runs until Sunday, Jan. 25.

At least 14 restaurants in Arlington are participating, offering prix fixe menus for $20.15 lunches and $35.15 dinner. The weeklong special is organized by the Restaurant Association of Metropolitan Washington to boost restaurant business after busy times, like the December holidays.

The list of restaurants participating in the promotion — which some argue isn’t a deal at all, but may cost diners more money — appears to have dwindled from previous restaurant weeks. Last August, 15 restaurants were featured on the RAMW website, a dip from 17 restaurants in 2013. This week, however, restaurants that have not previously participated have joined up, including the highly regarded Water & Wall in Virginia Square and Mazagan Restaurant on Columbia Pike.

The list of Arlington restaurants on RAMW’s website, where all of the restaurants participating in the D.C. area can be found, is below. Note: some restaurants may be offering separate specials for the week.

Leek American Bistro in BallstonWe’re about half-way through the winter edition of Washington Restaurant Week but some diners are asking themselves: is this really a good deal?

In theory, Restaurant Week, which features about a dozen Arlington restaurants this year, allows patrons to try out nice restaurants around the area at lower, fixed prices. In practice?

“A look at nearly two dozen restaurants participating in Restaurant Week shows not only that many of these dinners aren’t not much of a deal, but that you may actually be paying much more than what they’re worth,” reports the Washington City Paper.

Restaurant Week menus abound with the cheaper items from restaurants’ normal menus alongside items that aren’t even on the normal menu. Restaurant Week dinners are priced at $35.14, and the City Paper reports that items from the fixed price menus are often times cheaper if purchased individually.

The analysis did not consider the Restaurant Week lunches, which are priced at $20.14.

In your personal experience, have you found Restaurant Week to be a good deal?
