UPDATED: Man Jumps Off Apartment Balcony in Pentagon City

Police car lightsA man has jumped off an apartment balcony in Pentagon City in an apparent suicide attempt.

It happened on the 400 block of 12th Street S., between Army Navy Drive and S. Eads Street. That’s the same stretch of road that was shut down yesterday due to a man with mental health issues who reportedly injured himself and was being uncooperative with police.

That same man is believed to be the person who jumped today, according to scanner traffic.

There were several witnesses to the incident, who are being interviewed by police. Officers are again shutting down 12th Street S. between Army Navy and Eads while they take photos and investigate.

The man is being transported to the trauma center at George Washington University Hospital. The severity of his injuries are unclear at this time.

Update at 3:15 p.m. — The road is reopening, according to scanner traffic. The fire department is being called to the scene for a “washdown” of the area of impact.

BREAKING: Road Closed After Pedestrians Struck by Car in Tara-Leeway Heights

Update on 12/14/16 — The driver of the car was cited for failure to yield, said Arlington County Police Department spokeswoman Ashley Savage. The victims’ injuries are reported to be non-life-threatening.

“Mother and child struck were walking in the crosswalk,” Savage said, describing the circumstances of the crash. “[The] vehicle driver reported not seeing the pedestrians.”

Earlier: Washington Blvd is currently closed at N. Inglewood Street due to a pedestrian-involved crash.

Initial reports suggest a 40-year-old woman and a child were struck by a car near the intersection, in the Tara-Leeway Heights neighborhood, just after 6:15 p.m. A caller heard the sound of the crash, saw the woman lying in the street, and called 911, according to scanner traffic.

The woman was reported to have a leg injury and was bleeding from the head, while the child was found sitting on the sidewalk. Both were alert and conscious, but the exact extent of their injuries was not immediately clear.

The woman and the child were transported via ambulance to Inova Fairfax Hospital. That’s despite the crash happening not far from Virginia Hospital Center, which is considered less equipped to handle serious trauma patients.

Police remain on scene investigating the crash.There is a crosswalk at the intersection, but it’s unclear where the victims were struck.

Traffic is being diverted at N. Harrison Street and at Patrick Henry Drive.

Road Blocked in Pentagon City Due to Police Situation

Arlington police car(Updated at 12:15 p.m.) A portion of road in Pentagon City is being shut down due to a police situation.

Police are shutting down 12th Street S. between Army Navy Drive and S. Eads Street, near the Lenox Club and the Point at Pentagon City apartments.

Initial reports suggest that there is a man on one of the apartment balconies who is being uncooperative with police.

The incident started as a medical dispatch for a hand injury, possibly from the man punching a window or a glass door.

Police are currently trying to establish contact with the man, who is reported to have a history of mental health issues. Firefighters and medics are staging at the scene.

Tractor Trailer Brings Down Power Lines in Ballston, Driver Trapped

A FedEx tractor trailer pulled down some low-hanging power lines in the Ballston area Thursday evening, trapping the driver in the cab of the truck.

The accident happened just before 3:30 p.m., near the intersection of 13th Street N. and N. Stuart Street.

The top of the truck clipped some power lines as it was driving down the street, pulling them down and draping them across the semi-trailer. The lines were reported to be sparking on the road immediately afterward.

Though the driver was not physically trapped, he remained in the cab of the truck for fear of electrocution.

Arlington County police and firefighters responded to the scene, closing down roads and sidewalks while they waited for Dominion to shut off the power.

The driver was still in the cab when an ARLnow photographer left the scene, around 4 p.m.

Dominion reports that seven customers in the neighborhood are without power. Their electricity is expected to be restored between 7-11 p.m., according to Dominion’s website.

Rosslyn to Host Two-Day Holiday Festival, Five Mile Race

Bonfire at the Rosslyn Holiday Market on FridayThe holiday season is well underway and Rosslyn is getting into the spirit with a free two-day festival this weekend.

Rosslyn’s Holiday Market Festival + Bonfire kicks off at 3 p.m. Friday with the opening of an artisan holiday market in Gateway Park (1300 Lee Highway). The market will be feature more than 25 vendors with “a full variety of unique and high quality gifts.”

That will be followed at 5:30 p.m. by the opening of a number of local food trucks and a bar serving spiced red sangria, mulled cider, beer and wine. At 7 p.m. a bonfire will be lit and a DJ will start spinning. From 8-11 p.m. 80s cover band The Reflex will perform.

Great Chocolate Race logoOn Saturday, the Great Chocolate Race, a five mile chocolate-themed race, will start at 7:30 a.m. on N. Kent Street. That will be followed by a finish festival in Gateway Park, with food trucks and the bar opening early to serve hot chocolate and bloody marys.

The holiday market will open at 8 a.m. Saturday and continue until 3 p.m., with live musical performances, gingerbread house workshops and a visit from Santa in between.

A number of road closures are planned for Saturday’s race. From ACPD:

The Great Chocolate Race will take place on Saturday, December 10, 2016.  The following roadways will be closed for this event:

  • Wilson Blvd. between N. Lynn St. and Route 110 will be closed from 5:00am until 12:00pm.
  • Kent St. between Wilson Blvd. and N. 19th St. will be closed from 2:00am until 12:00pm.
  • Route 110 between Wilson Blvd. and I-395 will be closed from 6:00am until 11:00 am.
  • Route 27 from Route 110 to Columbia Pike (Westbound Only) will be closed from 6:00am until 11:00am.
  • Columbia Pike from Route 27 to the Air Force Memorial Entrance (Westbound Only) will be closed from 6:00am until 11:00am. Eastbound Columbia Pike will be routed to Joyce St.
  • Southgate Road will be closed at Columbia Pike from 6:00am to 11:00am.
  • Joyce Street heading north from Army Navy Drive will be closed from 6:00am until 11:00am.
  • Traffic from the Pentagon South Parking Lot will not be allowed west on Columbia Pike, all traffic will be routed on Route 27 toward the George Washington Parkway.

Street parking in the area will be restricted. Motorists should be on the lookout for temporary “No Parking” signs. Illegally parked vehicles may be ticketed or towed. If your vehicle is towed from a public street, call 703-558-2222.

Two Hurt, Utility Wires Downed in Yorktown Blvd Crash

Two people were taken to the hospital following a two-vehicle crash in the Yorktown neighborhood this afternoon.

The crash was reported around 1:30 p.m. at the intersection of Yorktown Blvd and N. George Mason Drive.

An elderly male driver was disoriented after the crash and had to be assisted out of his vehicle, according to scanner traffic. He and the other driver, an adult female, were transported to the hospital via ambulance. The injuries were not considered to be serious.

One of the vehicles, a Honda sedan, smashed into a utility pole after the initial crash, shattering the mid-section of the pole and downing numerous utility lines across both roads.

George Mason Drive is blocked at the crash scene, as is Yorktown Blvd east of the intersection.

Road Closures Planned for Jingle Bell Run 5K in Pentagon City

Jingle Bell Run logoA number of road closures are planned Saturday morning for the 2016 Jingle Bell Run/Walk 5K.

The race, which benefits the Arthritis Foundation, kicks off at 9 a.m. tomorrow in front of the Pentagon Row shopping center (1101 S. Joyce Street).

Via ACPD:

The Arlington County Police Department will close South Joyce Street and sections of Army Navy Drive for the 2016 Jingle Bell Run/Walk 5k on Saturday, December 3, 2016.

The affected streets are listed below:

  • South Joyce Street between South 15th Street and Army Navy Drive will be closed from 5:30 AM until 11:00 AM.
  • Army Navy Drive between South Joyce Street and South 25th Street will be closed from 7:00 AM until 11:00 AM.

Race attendees are encouraged to use Metro, however; if driving as a participant or spectator please utilize the parking garage at the Pentagon City Mall.

Street parking in the area will be restricted. Motorists should be on the lookout for temporary “No Parking” signs. Illegally parked vehicles may be ticketed or towed. If your vehicle is towed from a public street, call 703-558-2222.

BREAKING: House Fire in Penrose

(Updated at 9:25 a.m.) Firefighters from Arlington County and surrounding jurisdictions battled a house fire in the Penrose neighborhood this morning.

The two-alarm fire broke out in the basement of a home at the corner of S. Fillmore Street and 1st Road S. shortly before 8:30 a.m. The fire spread, prompting firefighting efforts in the attic as well as in the basement.

Just after 8:50 a.m., it was announced that the fire had been extinguished, though some light smoke was still coming from the home’s windows.

No injuries were reported. The home’s owner could be seen talking to fire investigators.

S. Fillmore Street, a commuter route, remained shut down between 2nd Street S. and Route 50 as of 9:25 a.m., as emergency vehicles remained parked across the road. Via its Twitter account, the fire department warned drivers to expect delays in the area.

Second Annual Jennifer Bush-Lawson Memorial 5K Race Planned This Weekend

2015 Jennifer Bush-Lawson Memorial 5K Race (photo via Facebook)Now in its second year, a 5K race and festival is being held this weekend in memory of an Arlington mom killed by a passing truck while placing her children in a minivan.

The Jennifer Bush-Lawson Memorial 5K Race will take place on Saturday starting at 9 a.m. It will feature a 5K race, a kids fun run and a “Family Fun Day Festival.”

The festival will feature “music, food trucks, a beer garden, photo booth, rock climbing, ambulance and fire truck display, face painting, moon bounce, obstacle course, balloon animals and more.”

The event is being held at the Knights of Columbus (5115 Little Falls Road) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. It benefits the Arlington Pediatric Center and the Virginia Hospital Center Outpatient Obstetrics Clinic, with a focus on prenatal and postnatal health services for underprivileged mothers and babies.

“Last year’s race raised over $100,000, and the goal for this year is to raise $150,000,” according to a press release.

A number of road closures will be in effect for the race. From the Arlington County Police Department:

The 2nd Annual Jennifer Bush-Lawson Memorial 5K Race will take place on Saturday, November 19, 2016.  The Arlington County Police Department will conduct the following road closures from approximately 8:30 AM until 11:00 AM to accommodate this event:

  • Smaller closures exist within the race area

Marine Corps Marathon to Close Arlington Streets

Driving and parking around Rosslyn, Crystal City and other parts of Arlington could become a particularly challenging experience later this month.

Several streets in the county are set to close to traffic for the 41st Marine Corps Marathon Sunday, Oct. 30.

The race is scheduled to start about 7:55 a.m. on Route 110 between the Pentagon and Arlington Memorial Drive. Thousands of people then are expected to run on a 26.2-mile course through Arlington and the District.

During the marathon, Crystal City is slated to have an all-day family party with moon bounces, face paintings and crafts. Rosslyn also is set to throw a finish festival with live music and a beer garden.

The Arlington County Police Department, Virginia State Police and Pentagon Force Protection Agency plan to close the following roads, starting at 3:30 a.m.:

Arlington Ridge Road Blocked Due to Downed Tree

A downed tree that’s resting on power lines along Arlington Ridge Road near S. Lang Street has prompted a temporary road closure.

Arlington Ridge Road is currently blocked between 23rd Street S. and S. Glebe Road while crews evaluate the situation and prepare to remove the tree.

Scanner reports suggest that the tree fell just as a bus of senior citizens was driving by. The bus  remained on the scene but no significant damage nor injuries were reported.
