Water Main Repairs to Close Road — Arlington Ridge Road is scheduled be closed in both directions at 23rd Street S. from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. today for water main repairs. Detours will be in place, but drivers should consider alternate routes, Arlington County says.

Airport Strike is Back on Starting Tonight — A strike by contract service workers at Reagan National and other major U.S. airports is back on, starting tonight. The strike was initially planned for last week but was postponed due to the Brussels terror attacks. [Washington Post]

Arson Suspect Due in Arlington Court — A Reston man suspected of a home invasion and arson in Fairfax County is scheduled to be in an Arlington courtroom tomorrow. Antwan Green is also facing multiple charges stemming from crashing a stolen vehicle in Arlington on Dec. 10 and carrying a concealed weapon without a permit. [Reston Now]

Fundraiser for Accessible Community Garden — Arlington County is trying to raise $10,000 from donors in order to build four “vertical gardens” that are accessible to those with disabilities or mobility issues. Currently, none of the county’s community gardens are accessible. The vertical gardens would be built at the Glebe & Lang Street Community Garden, along S. Glebe Road. The county is hoping to complete fundraising and construction by the end of June. [Fund Your Park]

Arlington Startup Acquired — Arlington-based startup Encore Alert has been acquired by Meltwater, a San Francisco-based brand analytics and consulting firm. As a result of the acquisition, the Encore Alert team has moved to the Bay Area. [DC Inno]

Co-Working Growing Quickly — Co-working providers are growing quickly and are expected by some analysts “to absolutely explode over the next five years.” Two of the top players are WeWork, which just opened a new office in Crystal City, and MakeOffices, which is opening a new flagship co-working space in Clarendon within the next few months. MakeOffices is based in Rosslyn, after being founded as UberOffices in 2012. [Bisnow]

Tree Falls on Utility Lines, Cars Near Gunston Middle School

A large tree has fallen across a residential street near Gunston Middle School, bringing down utility lines and damaging a parked car.

The tree fell around noon, amid gusty winds. No injuries were reported.

Currently, 28th Street S. is blocked between S. Lang Street and Arlington Ridge Road.

Numerous crews from Arlington County and Comcast are on scene, preparing to remove the tree and repair the lines and snapped utility poles.

ACPD to Hold Anti-Drunk Driving Event During Clarendon Bar Crawl

Over the past year or so, the Arlington County Police Department has boosted its presence at bar crawls, in part to prevent wild scenes like this one.

This weekend’s Shamrock Crawl in Clarendon will be no exception.

The police department will hold a “Pass the Keys Anti-Drunk Driving Event” from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday, during the bar crawl. Expect a mix of fun activities and serious public education, along with some live tweeting.

As a result of the anti-DUI event, police will be closing 11th Street N. from N. Highland Street to N. Garfield Street.

Man Trapped in Overturned Vehicle on Williamsburg Blvd

A man in his 70s was trapped in an SUV that overturned in North Arlington early this afternoon.

The crash happened around 12:45 p.m., on Williamsburg Blvd near the intersection with N. Glebe Road.

The man was promptly extricated from the vehicle by firefighters. He did not appear to be seriously hurt, according to scanner traffic, and was transported via ambulance to Virginia Hospital Center.

Williamsburg Blvd is closed while a tow crew removes the vehicle and debris from the roadway.

Construction Accident Shuts Down Lynn Street Friday Morning

An accident at the Central Place construction site in Rosslyn shut down N. Lynn Street earlier this morning.

The accident happened around 6:45 a.m. Lynn Street was closed at Wilson Blvd due to the emergency response.

“A construction worker was unloading material from a crane when the material fell on top of him,” said Arlington County Police spokeswoman Ashley Savage. “Other construction workers on scene were able to [free] him.”

A construction crane was used to bring the injured worker down from the fifth level of the under-construction building, said a fire department spokesman.

The worker was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

TRAFFIC ALERT: Partial Closures of N. George Mason Drive, Marshall Drive Tonight

The southbound lanes of a portion of N. George Mason Drive will be closed to traffic during the evening rush hour.

Southbound traffic is being detoured between Patrick Henry Drive and 20th Street, just south of Lee Highway, according to the Arlington Dept. of Environmental Services. The closure is due to emergency water main repairs, said an Arlington Alert email.

“Seek alternate routes,” DES said via Twitter.

Separately, Marshall Drive remains closed tonight near the Iwo Jima Memorial due to a sinkhole reported this morning. Repairs to the roadway are still underway, according to scanner traffic.

UPDATED: Police Investigating Shots Fired Call Along Columbia Pike

Update at 4:15 p.m. — The man who punched a wall was treated for a possible hand injury. Police believe that sound may have been mistaken for gunshots.

Update at 3:45 p.m. — The scene has been cleared, no evidence of a shooting was found and Columbia Pike is reopening, according to scanner traffic.

A Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman said the earlier crash on S. Buchanan Street involved a deputy who was responding to the shots fired call. Neither the deputy nor the other driver involved — who was issued a traffic citation — was seriously injured, said Maj. Susie Doyel.

Update at 2:40 p.m. — Two residents have exited the building and told police that they were having an argument in which one half of the couple punched a wall, according to scanner traffic. Police are still taking a cautious stance and maintaining a perimeter around the building. Also, a parent says that nearby Kenmore Middle School is in “secure the school” mode, possibly as a result of the incident.

Arlington County Police have shut down Columbia Pike in the area of S. Frederick Street, just west of the Arlington Mill Community Center, while officers investigate reports of shots fired inside an apartment building.

The shots fired calls came from residents in an apartment building, the Arbor Heights Apartments, on the 800 block of S. Frederick Street. One resident told police he or she heard gunshots and then saw people running from the building.

In addition to the closure of Columbia Pike, S. Frederick Street is closed between the Pike and 8th Road S.

Police have staged outside the apartment complex but have not entered it yet.

Meanwhile, police and medics are responding to a report of an accident with multiple injuries on the 900 block of S. Buchanan Street, several blocks away from the possible shooting scene.

Street Closed for Water Main Break in Lyon Village

One block of N. Herndon Street in Lyon Village is closed due to a water main break.

The break happened below the road, between N. Jackson Street and Key Blvd. Crews are on scene preparing to repair the water main.

Repairs are expected to be completed around 11 p.m. Between 5 and 20 water customers are affected, according to Arlington Dept. of Environmental Services spokeswoman Jessica Baxter.

‘Love the Run You’re With’ 5K, Party Set for Valentine’s Day

Singles, couples and members of the “it’s complicated” crowd are set to converge on Pentagon City for a Valentine’s Day-themed 5K and party this weekend.

Pacers Running’s “Love the Run You’re With” race is scheduled to take over parts of S. Joyce Street and Army Navy Drive Sunday morning. The 5K kicks off at 9 a.m. and begins and ends at Pentagon Row.

Doubling as a matchmaking affair, the race uses bib numbers that correspond to runners’ relationship statuses. Racers can register as single (“Stupid Cupid”), it’s complicated (“Love ’em or Leave ’em”) or in a relationship (“Co-Dependent”).

From 7 to 11 a.m., the Arlington County Police Department plans to close:

S. Joyce Street between S. 15th Street and Army Navy Drive.
Army Navy Drive between S. Joyce Street and S. 25th Street.

Registration is $45 online and includes a blanket — one you’ll probably need with the frigid temperatures. Following the 5K, runners can head to Champps at 1201 S. Joyce Street for a post-race party that will have an awards presentation and a karaoke contest.

Kenmore Street Closed in Nauck Due to Flipped Convertible

Part of S. Kenmore Street is temporarily closed to traffic due to a flipped vehicle.

The crash happened around 3:30 p.m. near the Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Initial reports suggest a driver in a blue Ford Mustang convertible lost control of the vehicle and slammed into a parked pickup truck.

The convertible flipped on its roof in the middle of the street. The man who was driving was reported to be bleeding from his forehead and was transported to a local hospital.

It’s unclear how exactly the crash happened. The parked pickup truck wound up perpendicular to the street, with its drive shaft partially detached and resting on the ground. The owners of the truck, apparently nearby residents, came out with a wheelbarrow to remove items from the pickup’s bed.

Arlington County Police are investigating the crash and documenting the scene before the car is towed away. Kenmore Street is closed between 19th and 22nd streets.
