Heavy rain on 7/27/15(Updated at 4:15 p.m.) Arlington County is under a Severe Thunderstorm Warning until 4:30 p.m. and a Flash Flood Warning until 6:45 p.m.

Parts of Arlington were inundated by heavy rain and frequent lightning and thunder this afternoon. There were scattered reports of power outages along Columbia Pike and people trapped in stuck elevators in Virginia Square and other parts of the county.

A wind gust of 58 miles per hour was reported in the Cherrydale neighborhood of Arlington during the storm, according to the National Weather Service. Flooding was reported in the westbound lanes of Washington Blvd, prompting police to close a ramp from Route 50.

Arlington and much of the rest of the D.C. area is under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch tonight.

Forecasters say a line of storms may roll through the area with wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour. From the National Weather Service:

Storm damage around Arlington (file photo)More than 3,000 Dominion customers in Arlington were without power following an intense thunderstorm.

The storm, which hit just before 1:00 a.m., packed frequent, strobe-like lightning, high sustained winds and very heavy rain.

Several trees were reported down around Arlington, including one blocking Washington Blvd at 2nd Street N. Dominion reported 3,144 customers in Arlington County without power as of 1:30 a.m.

Storm approaching Arlington 6/23/15Update at 8:15 p.m. — The strong storm that blew through Arlington this evening has left behind fallen trees, widespread power outages and long flight delays at Reagan National Airport.

Dominion Virginia Power is reporting 4,245 customers without power in Arlington — almost 5 percent of all customers in the county. Power outages have been reported in Pentagon City, in Courthouse near I-66 and in the Virginia Square area.

The Fashion Centre at Pentagon City mall was evacuated during the storm due to a power outage there. Scanner reports suggest firefighters rescued some customers from stuck elevators. The Pentagon Centre mall was also reported to be without power.

Other outages were reported around the intersections of Lee Highway and N. Adams Street and Lee Highway and N. Kirkwood Road, where traffic signals were not functioning.

At Reagan National Airport, meanwhile departure delays of up to one hour and 45 minutes and arrival delays of up to 45 minutes were reported.

Update at 6:50 p.m. — The Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been upgraded to a warning.

Storms in Pentagon City on 7/8/14Arlington and the D.C. area is under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch through 7:00 p.m.

The National Weather Service says much of the eastern United States is at risk for damaging storms today. In the D.C. area, the risk is a bit lower than points south and west.

“There is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening,” NWS said in a hazardous weather outlook. “Damaging wind gusts will be the primary concern.”


The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for Arlington and much of the immediate D.C. metro area.

A line of thunderstorms is rumbling across the region from the west, bringing the potential for torrential rainfall and dangerous lightning and wind gusts early Saturday evening.
