Ballston Common Mall demolition

(Updated at 4 p.m.) In Arlington, 2016 was a year that was filled with local stories that were tragic, triumphant or just plain weird.

We’re counting down the top 20 most-read articles of 2016 this week.

Kicking off the list today is #16-20.

20. Creepy Clown Sighting Reported in Arlington (15,531 views)
Arlington’s version of the international “creepy clown” hysteria, which unsurprisingly died down shortly after Halloween, reached its peak when “a caller told police that her child saw a clown emerge from some woods in the Arlington Mill neighborhood.”

19. Demolition Underway at Ballston Common Mall (15,867 views)
There is apparently something satisfying about seeing an outdated shopping mall get torn to pieces. Especially when what’s taking its place looks pretty cool.

18. Washington Blvd Shut Down After Man Shoots Self in Car (16,255 views)
This story was tragic for the man and his family. Also, the way in which he chose to end his life disrupted the evening commute of thousands and traumatized first responders.

Hard Times Cafe in Clarendon Closing17. Hard Times Cafe in Clarendon is Closing (16,667 views)
This long-time Clarendon staple only gave customers a one-day heads up that it was closing for good. We have been unable to substantiate rumors as to the exact reason for its closing, though a combination of high rent and sluggish business seems likely. A replacement — G.O.A.T Sports Bar — was recently announced.

16. Teen Charged With Murder in Fatal Stabbing (17,181 views)
A 17-year-old was arrested and charged with murder in the fatal Friday night stabbing of a 46-year-old family member.

Look for #11-15 on the countdown tomorrow.

ARLnow.com is holding its fifth anniversary bash in Crystal City tonight from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

If you haven’t booked your tickets yet, you can still do so through 5:00 p.m. on Eventbrite. Tickets will also be available at the door.

The event, at the ever-expanding headquarters of the Crystal Tech Fund and Disruption Corporation, will feature two hours of all-you-can eat food from Ruth’s Chris and plenty of wine and beer, thanks to our friends at the Crystal City BID.

To help celebrate our fifth anniversary (which technically is on Thursday), we’re recounting some of the top stories of 2010.

Coming off of the depths of the Great Recession, the year that was 2010 was especially active for business openings in Crystal City. Here are some of the memorable openings in our first year:

See you tonight, Arlington!

Crystal Tech Fund in Crystal CityWe’re less than a week away from ARLnow.com’s fifth anniversary party. If you like ARLnow.com and you like fun, presumably you have already reserved your tickets — if not, check out the trivia question below for a chance to get 20 percent off.

As part of the lead-up to the party (hosted at the Crystal Tech Fund offices, pictured, in Crystal City), we’re taking a trip down memory lane to the year we launched.

That year, 2010, featured lots of memorable local stories, some of them downright weird. Do you remember…

Now, for the trivia question: what was the original name of the new-for-2010 rooftop deck at Whitlow’s? (It was renamed “Wilson’s” prior to opening.)

If you know the answer, enter that as a promo code (without spaces) on our Eventbrite page for 20 percent off. You’re welcome!

Our fifth anniversary bash will be held on January 27, from 6-8 p.m. at Crystal Tech Fund (2231 Crystal Drive, 10th floor). The price of admission includes craft beer, wine and heavy appetizers from Ruth’s Chris Steak House.

The event is hosted by the Crystal City BID and sponsored by the Arlington County Federal Credit Union.

ARLnow.com in 2010ARLnow.com launched on Jan. 29, 2010, following a coffee-fueled all-nighter and lots of DIY WordPress tinkering.

What have followed are five years of continuous local news coverage, from tiny articles about potholes that no other news outlet would report on to big scoops that quickly have become international news.

As part of our five year anniversary, we’re looking back (in no particular order) at some of the defining Arlington stories of 2010. Some are weighty and easily remembered. Others, not so much.

Do you remember…

If you remembered all of those, congrats! You’re officially an ARLnow.com early adopter.

Come reminisce with us at our Fifth Anniversary Bash on January 27, from 6-8 p.m. at Crystal Tech Fund in Crystal City. Through 11:30 tonight tickets are discounted to an “early adopter” rate of $12.90. After that, the price goes up to $20.10.

The event is hosted by the Crystal City Business Improvement District and the price of admission includes adult beverages and delicious finger food.

Happy new year, Arlington!

You’ve waited patiently for this post, and here it is, just hours before 2014 comes to a close and a new year of local developments is ushered in. (Those of you who receive our email newsletter may be seeing this on Jan. 1, in which case feel free to ignore this pointless introduction.)

You’ve already seen #11-20 and #6-10. Now, without additional fanfare, here are the most-viewed articles of 2014.

Pedestrian struck in front of Nottingham Elementary5. Woman Dies After Being Struck By Dump Truck (29,711 views) — It was a nightmare come to life, and it happened right in front of a local elementary school. On a cold February day, 39-year-old Jennifer Lawson was struck by a truck as she loaded one of her young children in her minivan, which was parked on N. Little Falls Road in front of Nottingham Elementary. Lawson died at the hospital, leaving behind a husband and three children.

A memorial fund was established for the family, and the incident helped to bring about additional safety changes on Little Falls Road. Despite those changes, nine months later another mother was struck while loading her kids into an SUV, just one block from the original accident.

4. Man Convicted of Assault on Roommate Who Drew a Penis on His Face (46,278 views) — It should come as little surprise that the follow-up to our No. 1 most-viewed article of 2013 would itself subsequently rank in the top 5. James Watson, a 30-something Lyon Village resident, was found guilty in May of the crime that earned him international attention — beating the snot out of a roommate who drew a dong on his face while he was snoozing. It was, of course, the mugshot — in which you can see the artwork — that turned this from a run-of-the-mill crime report item to an accidental internet sensation.

Watson was fined but the judge did not order any additional jail time. A quote from the prosecutor in the case suggests the time Watson served after his arrest might have been punishment enough. “He was an object of ridicule in jail that weekend because he still had the penis drawn on his face,” the prosecutor told us.

Maura Fussell (photo courtesy ACPD)3. Police: Drunk Woman Shows Up Naked to Visit Husband in Jail (57,215 views) — Speaking of the Arlington County Detention Facility and accidental internet fame, a Reston resident became an overnight meme in March when she allegedly showed up naked at the Arlington magistrate’s office following a Clarendon bar crawl. Maura Fussell was there to visit her husband, who also had a bit too much to drink at the bar crawl and had earlier been granted a room in the jail. Why she reportedly lacked clothing is still unknown to us.

Fussell pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor drunk in public charge in May, paying a small fine but avoiding jail time. A separate misdemeanor trespassing charge, amended down from indecent exposure, is still pending, according to court records.

2. Bar Crawl Attendee Strips Naked, Leads Police on High Speed Chase (85,876 views) — Another Clarendon bar crawl, another high-profile arrest. This time, 22-year-old Charles Mack stripped naked during June’s “All-American Bar Crawl,” then hopped in a car and led police on a brief but exceedingly dangerous chase around the neighborhood. He finally ran into a couple of cars, then was tased and taken into custody after he hopped out of the car and tried to flee on foot — all that while still naked and in front of dozens of revelers.

In September Mack pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of drugs and felony eluding, via an Alford plea. On Dec. 12 he was sentenced to three months in prison, followed by three years of probation and a $1,500 fine.

It was a momentous year for Arlington, as demonstrated by the second of our three “Top Stories of 2014” posts.

Perhaps the biggest Arlington story of the year, in terms of local policy significance, came in at No. 6 on our list (which ranks the most-read articles of 2014). The year’s only homicide in Arlington County also made this list.

Here are articles Nos. 6-10 on our countdown. (See Nos. 11-20 here.)

Eventide Restaurant10. Eventide Restaurant Closes in Clarendon (16,098 views) — Whenever a restaurant opens or closes in Arlington, it’s almost always a big story for us in terms of readership. Restaurants help to give neighborhoods character, serve as a gathering place and are a tangible part of the community. Losing a well-known and well-liked restaurant like Eventide hits home for many people. While this article had more readers, a follow-up article announcing Don Tito, Eventide’s successor, received more comments.

9. Westover Deaths the Result of a Murder-Suicide, Police Say (19,553 views) — The sad story of 31-year-old Kristy Flowers, a Westover resident with a promising future, pulled on the heartstrings of many readers earlier this month. Police say Flowers was murdered by her live-in boyfriend, Ray Savoy, Jr., who then turned the gun on himself. They were a seemingly happy couple in photos posted to Facebook just weeks before the shooting, making the shooting ever more senseless.

8. Police Investigating Possible Homicide in Westover (20,191 views) — ARLnow.com was the first to report on the tragic crime that was also the focus of our No. 9 story. It originally came in on the scanner as two people found dead in an apartment. While it wasn’t reported as a homicide over the air, we immediately sent a reporter to the scene. We waited for a source to confirm our suspicions before we published our report that police were investigating a possible murder-suicide.

7. Stabbing at Ballston Metro Station (20,508 views) — Any time you have a large number of police and fire department vehicles rush to a Metro station, it’s going to get a lot of attention. We reported on this brutal stabbing after receiving numerous tips from readers. A witness report that was retweeted by @unsuckdcmetro also caught our attention: “Someone was just stabbed on inbound platform at Ballston. Blood all over the platform.” We were able to get some initial information from Metro, then update the article with more details the next day.

Rendering of a streetcar along Columbia Pike6. Streetcar Project Canceled (23,411 views) — To say that this news was a surprise is an understatement. After many years of planning and a couple years of pitched controversy and political infighting, Arlington’s ambitious half-billion-dollar streetcar project was nixed with one somber press conference and a quick vote.

We were told that morning (Nov. 18) that a “significant” announcement regarding the streetcar would be coming at noon. But even Arlington insiders were caught off-guard at the sudden reversal. ARLnow.com editor Scott Brodbeck and Sun Gazette editor Scott McCaffrey took bets on what the announcement would be — and both were wrong. The one person who saw this coming was local Democratic political strategist and blogger Ben Tribbett, who told ARLnow.com that “the streetcar is dead” just hours after the historic re-election of County Board member John Vihstadt.

It’s time again for our annual list of most-read stories of the year.

Readers gravitated toward stories comical and serious, from signs that look like genitals to car crashes and elections. The year turned out to be an historic one, with unprecedented election results and massive policy shifts. It also proved that Arlington readers care just as much about local politics as they do about drunken shenanigans.

Without further ado, the first 10 stories on our countdown:

Six vehicles involved in crash at Columbia Pike and S. Dinwiddie Street20. ART Bus Driver Charged After Seven-Vehicle Wreck (12,868 views) — An ART bus hit multiple cars, both moving and parked, on Columbia Pike, sending four people to the hospital. The bus driver had been driving in revenue service for only a month. During the accident, the bus took out several bricks from a retaining wall and destroyed trees and benches. The wreck left a trail of destruction highly uncommon, even in multiple-vehicle accidents. The accident drew dozens of spectators to the scene, who stayed for hours while police and fire crews cleaned up.

19. Fatal Crash Suspect’s Friend Died in Wreck One Block Away (12,947 views) — After another fatal car accident at the heavily trafficked Lee Highway intersections near the Key Bridge, a little digging on social media into the suspect revealed a surprising connection. The driver, who allegedly drove drunk struck a car and killed a 24-year-old man, was friends with Sami Ullah. A year earlier almost to the day, Ullah died in a car accident a block away after driving 90 mph over the Key Bridge. The connection between the two crashes was both chilling and sad.

18. Restaurant Lashes Out at County Board Over Revoked Permit (12,976 views) — A routine County Board meeting over the Pines of Italy’s live entertainment permit became a minor national story. A woman there in support of the restaurant called the County Board “c–ksuckers,” and sports gossip website Deadspin deemed it worthy of a story all its own.

17. Man Arrested After Pepper Spraying GMU Law Prof (14,149 views) — A man tried to place a law professor under citizen’s arrest, but, when the professor resisted, he received a face full of pepper spray. No students came to his aid, according to Forbes, which may have been because the professor was teaching a class on vigilantism, “so many students in the class may have believed that the assault was part of the planned lesson.”

The logo for Market Place & Cafe in Ballston16. Despite Ridicule from Yelp Reviewers, Ballston Cafe Keeps Phallic Sign (14,176 views) — A friend of ARLnow.com, visiting from out of town and staying at the Holiday Inn in Ballston, got the hat tip for this story. While walking back from the Metro, he spotted Market Place & Café’s phallic sign. The sign has been up for more than half a decade and had already been the subject of online mockery. Unfazed, the owner — who declined to speak to ARLnow.com for the story — has kept the sign up and stayed in business.

15. Vihstadt Wins Historic Victory (14,426 views) — After a runaway victory in April’s special election, John Vihstadt won just as decisively in the general, sending political shockwaves throughout the county and directly leading to the Columbia Pike streetcar’s cancellation. Vihstadt hosted an election night party in his home, and the mood from dozens of supporters, family and friends was jubilant. Vihstadt, in fact, was pressing those in attendance not to count the chickens before they hatched, settling them after each precinct made it clearer and clearer that he would emerge victorious.

14. New Apartments, Town Center Planned for ‘Revamped’ Ballston Mall (14,435 views) — Ballston’s big announcement of the plans for the much-maligned Ballston Common Mall came at the same time as the snafu that ended the Restaurant Challenge. The plans for the mall are still under review and have yet to be approved by the County Board. (more…)

So far this week we’ve taken a look at top stories #6-10 and #11-15 for the year — now it’s time for the top 5.

The following stories received the most page views on ARLnow.com in 2012. All of these articles, with the exception of No. 5, benefited to varying degrees from links from national websites like Drudge Report and Reddit.

"Happy 420" sign in N. Arlington (photo courtesy James D.)5. Road Sign Wishes Passersby a ‘Happy 420’ (18,012 views) — Some pranksters hacked into a road sign near the Madison Community Center in north Arlington on April 20, and 3,500+ Facebook shares later the article had a very “high” page view count.

4. Crime Report: Man in Wheelchair Robs CVS (27,341 views) — A man in a wheelchair tried to shoplift an electric razor and some bottles of wine from the CVS Pharmacy in Courthouse, according to police. When an employee tried to wheel the alleged thief back into the store, police said, he brandished a knife and made a getaway — that is, until cops caught up with him at the Courthouse Metro station.

Screenshot of the TLC program Strange Sex featuring an Arlington resident with the world's largest breasts3. Video: Arlington Resident Has the World’s Largest Natural Breasts (33,061 views) — Fairlington resident Annie Hawkins-Turner raised some eyebrows around town when she appeared on the TLC show Strange Sex to talk about her size 102ZZZ chest, recognized as the world’s largest natural breasts. While much of the traffic for this story was local, coming from email links and social networking sites, Reddit also contributed several thousand views.

2. Man Questioned for Molotov Cocktail at Mall (55,372 views) — The much-maligned Ballston Common Mall briefly made national news, but for all the wrong reasons. A man threw a Molotov cocktail-like incendiary device into the mall’s food court, but the flammable liquid inside failed to ignite after it hit the floor and no one was injured. The FBI and the ATF came to investigate the incident, but good old fashioned police work — acting on a tip from a citizen — led to the arrest of a suspect near the county government building by ACPD officers.

Andrew Dziuk mugshot (photo courtesy Arlington County Police Department)1. Crime Report: Pulling Guns on the Ritz (65,535 views) — We wish we could claim it was the semi-clever headline, but really it was a link from the Drudge Report that led more than 60,000 people to read the strange tale of Andrew Dziuk, a 29-year-old Centreville man. Dziuk was accused of brandishing a pair of loaded handguns, apparently in a drunken state of incredulity after learning the room rates at the Pentagon City Ritz-Carlton hotel.

Our No. 1 article’s 65,535 views makes it the second most-viewed article since the launch of the site in January 2010. The most-viewed ARLnow.com story of all time remains our article about former Sergeant Major of the U.S. Army Gene C. McKinney, who was accused of hitting a person with his car after what his passengers described as the slug line ride from hell. The article has received 74,188 views, thanks in part to the Drudge Report. McKinney pleaded guilty to reckless driving and disorderly conduct late last year and was ordered to serve 10 days in jail.

Continuing our Top 15 list of the most-read Arlington stories of 2012, today we present numbers 6 through 10.

Page view counts for each article are listed in parenthesis. So far this year, ARLnow.com has recorded more than 12 million page views, up from 7.2 million in the same time period last year.

Storm damage on the 1200 block of S. Barton St10. Thousands Still Without Power in Arlington (13,267 views) — After the June 29 derecho blew through the area, with winds up to 70 miles per hour, much of Arlington County was in the dark. Some 68,000 Dominion customers in Arlington lost power during or immediately after the storm. Dozens of trees and utility poles were knocked down, numerous local roads were blocked and some gas stations ran out of fuel. On top of it all, sweltering heat followed in the wake of the storm.

9. Woman Dies After Being Hit By Cyclist (13,609 views) — An 80-year-old woman, identified by police as Ita Lapina of Arlington, died after she moved into the path of and was struck by a passing cyclist who had just yelled “on your left.” The 62-year-old cyclist was not charged with a crime.

8. Police Investigate Possible Meth Lab in Va. Square (15,270 views) — A 225-unit high rise apartment building in Virginia Square was evacuated for several hours on a Monday night in August when police discovered a suspected meth lab inside one of the apartments. Two men were arrested and charged with Attempted Manufacturing of Methamphetamine. On of the suspects was a former USA Today technology writer.

Critical pedestrian accident near the intersection of N. Highland Street and Clarendon Blvd7. Police Investigate Critical Pedestrian Accident in Clarendon (17,114 views) — A 27-year-old man from Collinsville, Va. suffered a severe head injury after being struck by a car in Clarendon. Numerous bar-goers witnessed the accident, which occurred on Clarendon Boulevard, near the Metro station, at 12:30 a.m. on a Saturday. Earlier this month, the victim’s father told ARLnow.com that his son, Michael Sizemore, is slowly but steadily recovering his cognitive and speech abilities.

6. Police: Man Sent Ex-Girlfriend Topless Photos of Herself (17,728 views) — A 27-year-old Arlington resident was accused and later convicted of taking a topless photo of his ex-girlfriend while she was sleeping. The victim told police and the jury that the suspect, Trevor Frye, emailed the photo to her following an argument. Fyre, who represented himself in court, was acquitted on a separate charge of unlawful entry.

Today we begin our annual countdown of the top stories in Arlington in the past year.

The list reflects the articles with the most page views in 2012. Crime was a major theme this year, whereas the story selection was a bit more varied last year. Unlike in years past, not a single restaurant-related article made it on our list. (At #28, with 9,687 views, the news that World of Beer was coming to Ballston was our most-viewed restaurant story.)

Note that this year the view count in the articles themselves might be significantly different from the page view numbers listed here; ever since our website redesign, the public view counts have been much lower than the actual view counts (as measured directly by Google). Our web developers are still working to fix this.

Our list will be divided into three parts, with the other two parts to be published Thursday and Friday. Here are top stories No. 11-15:

Arlington County Police are investigating two suspicious deaths in the Fairlington neighborhood15. ACPD: Woman Raped on Four Mile Run Trail (11,547 views) — A 23-year-old woman was jogging along the Four Mile Run Trail near Glencarlyn park when a man with a kitchen knife grabbed her, pulled her into some tall vegetation and sexually assaulted her. The suspect was reported to have a small head and a high-pitched voice.

14. Police Investigate Murder-Suicide (11,897 views) — Two people were found dead in an apartment near Fairlington, in what was determined by police to be a murder-suicide. The victims were later identified as Xiomara Benitez, 30, and Juan Carlos Mox Mox, 30, both of Arlington. Police identified Benitez as the victim and Mox Mox as the subject. They were married with two children, according to police.

Serious accident on Washington Blvd near Glebe Road13. Major Accident on Washington Blvd in Ballston (12,003 views) — Three people were sent to the hospital after a serious ten-vehicle wreck in Ballston. An out-of-control SUV ended up on top of a convertible as a result of the accident, which snarled evening rush hour traffic. The SUV driver was later charged with reckless driving.

12. Police Investigate Stabbing Near Clarendon (13,115 views) — A man suffered life-threatening injuries as a result of a brutal stabbing in broad daylight near Clarendon. The victim was stabbed outside the Pio Pio restaurant on Wilson Boulevard after police say he chased a man who was trying to break into his car. In November, police arrested 28-year-old Elin Daniel Reyes of Arlington for the crime.

Del. David Englin11. Englin Blasts GOP Bill for Requiring ‘Vaginal Penetration’ (13,197 views) — Del. David Englin (D) spoke out against a bill that had just passed the Virginia House of Delegates, in what would become the signature state legislative controversy of 2012. Del. Englin issued a statement blasting Virginia Republicans for the bill, which would have required women seeking an abortion to undergo an invasive “transvaginal” ultrasound. After a furor that made national news, the state legislature would later pass a watered-down version of the bill which only required an external ultrasound. Englin would later resign after admitting to an extramarital affair.

Today we wrap up the countdown of the top 10 most-read ARLnow.com stories of 2011. Without further ado, here are numbers 1-5.

5. Ambulances Dispatched to Rosslyn Metro Station (11,936 views) — On Oct. 11, a man jumped in front of an Orange Line Metro train (see #4), forcing a shutdown of the busy rail line during the evening rush hour. The Rosslyn Metro station got so crowded as a result of trains offloading there that police were called in for crowd control. Cops arrived and found riders nearly falling off the jam-packed platform. There were also people seen gasping for breath as they rode up the station’s long escalators, according to police radio traffic. Fearing a possible gas leak and stampede situation, police called in a mass casualty response from several neighboring jurisdictions. Numerous ambulances and fire engines converged on the station, gridlocking traffic in Rosslyn. In the end, it was only a precautionary move — one person was treated after suffering an asthma attack, but no other injuries were reported.

4. Person Hit By Train at Clarendon Metro Station (12,025 views) — One man’s decision to purposely throw himself in front of a Metro train threw the evening rush hour into chaos. Though the man’s fatal decision was a tragedy, it’s also worth mentioning the traumatized train conductor and the dozens of passengers who had to spend 75 claustrophobic minutes breathing hot, stale air on the striking train as technical rescue crews worked to extricate the man.

3. Car Explodes in Penrose (12,431 views) — When a white BMW exploded just a block or two from a secure military facility in Penrose, many people assumed the worst. Those fears of foul play were exacerbated when heavily-armed police officers arrested a young man in a nearby apartment building. In the end, however, no one was injured and the explosion turned out to be an accident: it was a welder’s acetylene torch that exploded.

2. Collapse at Rosslyn Construction Site (15,870 views) — Amid heavy rains, a large retaining wall partially collapsed at the Sedona and Slate apartment construction site in Rosslyn. The collapse closed local roads and put the structural integrity of an adjacent apartment building in doubt, eventually forcing the 20-35 people who lived there to find new homes.

1. For Sale: 18-Foot Topless Wooden Mermaid (19,545 views) — In a story that received national attention from websites like Fark.com, we reported on a well-known, 18-foot wooden sculpture in the Leeway Overlee neighborhood that was put up for sale by a homeowner. The lead paragraph said it all: “If you’ve ever dreamed of owning a huge, wooden mermaid with big, exposed breasts, now is your chance. All you need is three grand and a chainsaw.”

(Note that due to various technical issues, the number of pageviews cited here might not match up with the number of pageviews displayed on the page.)
