Flash Flood Watch Issued for Arlington, Region

The National Weather Service has issued a Flash Flood Watch for Arlington and the rest of the D.C. region, starting Friday morning. More watches and warnings are expected to be issued as Hurricane Joaquin nears, on the back of the nor’easter.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued

Arlington and much of the rest of the D.C. area is under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch tonight.

Forecasters say a line of storms may roll through the area with wind gusts up to 70 miles per hour. From the National Weather Service:

The storm watch is in effect through 1:00 a.m. A Flash Flood Watch is also in effect tonight, with forecasters warning of the potential for torrential rainfall of 1-2 inches during the storms.

UPDATED: Thousands Without Power Following Strong Storms

Storm approaching Arlington 6/23/15Update at 8:15 p.m. — The strong storm that blew through Arlington this evening has left behind fallen trees, widespread power outages and long flight delays at Reagan National Airport.

Dominion Virginia Power is reporting 4,245 customers without power in Arlington — almost 5 percent of all customers in the county. Power outages have been reported in Pentagon City, in Courthouse near I-66 and in the Virginia Square area.

The Fashion Centre at Pentagon City mall was evacuated during the storm due to a power outage there. Scanner reports suggest firefighters rescued some customers from stuck elevators. The Pentagon Centre mall was also reported to be without power.

Other outages were reported around the intersections of Lee Highway and N. Adams Street and Lee Highway and N. Kirkwood Road, where traffic signals were not functioning.

At Reagan National Airport, meanwhile departure delays of up to one hour and 45 minutes and arrival delays of up to 45 minutes were reported.

Update at 6:50 p.m. — The Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been upgraded to a warning.

Strong storm approaching Arlington (radar image via Weather.com)Update at 5:40 p.m. — The evening’s first storm has passed and blue skies have returned. The storm knocked out power to more than 3,000 Dominion customers in the Falls Church area and caused some damage in Arlington.

Trees were reported down on 26th Street N., near Marymount University and on 25th Street near S. Dinwiddie Street. A large branch was reported down at N. Fillmore Street and Pershing Drive.

Earlier: The National Weather Service has issued a Tornado Watch for Arlington County and much of the surrounding D.C. area.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch Issued

Storms in Pentagon City on 7/8/14Arlington and the D.C. area is under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch through 7:00 p.m.

The National Weather Service says much of the eastern United States is at risk for damaging storms today. In the D.C. area, the risk is a bit lower than points south and west.

“There is a slight risk of severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening,” NWS said in a hazardous weather outlook. “Damaging wind gusts will be the primary concern.”

Where to Watch the Fight and the Derby in Arlington

Match-TimelineWEB(Updated at 10:50 a.m.) One of the biggest sports days of the year is tomorrow, with two major events sure to fill up bars across the county: the Kentucky Derby and the “Fight of the Century.”

The 141st running of the Kentucky Derby will start around 6:30 p.m., and Circa at Clarendon (3010 Clarendon Blvd) is hosting Arlington’s watch party. Fancy hats are encouraged and mint juleps will be served for $7.

Welterweight champions Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao — long considered the two biggest names in boxing, but who have never fought before — will face off later that night (sometime around midnight, in all likelihood). The pay-per-view cost to view the fight is $99, which means bars in the area will ask viewers for cover charges to watch the most anticipated fight in years in their businesses.

Mad Rose Tavern (3100 Clarendon Blvd) is holding its own watch party, with women admitted free and men charged $20, with the price to escalate closer and closer to the opening bell. Just a few blocks away, Bracket Room (1210 N. Garfield Street) is charging a $30 cover to watch on their dozens of big-screen TVs.

In Courthouse, the freshly reopened Summers Restaurant (1520 N. Courthouse Road) is also showing the fight, expecting to charge between $25 and $30, depending on capacity. Nearby Courthaus Social is also showing the fight, with a cover charge of $5 for women and $10 for men.

As if the fight and the race weren’t enough, the Washington Capitals will face the New York Rangers for game two of their playoff series tomorrow. Numerous local bars are expected to show the 12:30 p.m. game.

Tornado Watch Issued for Arlington, Region

Storm clouds over Rosslyn 7/3/14A Tornado Watch has been issued for Arlington and the D.C. region through 10:00 tonight.

Forecasters say severe storms are likely late this afternoon and this evening and that an isolated tornado is possible.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to reach the around the evening rush hour.

‘The Bachelor’ Contestant to Watch Season Finale in Clarendon, Courthouse

The Bachelor contestants (photo via Facebook)Arlington’s very own contestant on the reality show “The Bachelor” will be at Clarendon’s very own “The Bachelorette” contestant-owned restaurant tonight for the 19th season finale.

Jillian Anderson was eliminated early on this season, and infamously slipped on a rug and nearly fell when she thought this season’s bachelor, Chris, called her name during the rose ceremony. Instead, he picked her competitor, Julia, and 25-year-old Anderson returned to her home in Arlington. Tonight, she will be at Bracket Room in Clarendon (1210 N. Garfield Street) to watch Chris hand out his final rose.

Bracket Room is owned by a former contestant of The Bachelorette, Chris Bukowski, and has hosted viewing parties for the reality show’s season finales since it opened in 2013. Happy hour begins at 4:00 p.m. and the show starts at 8:00 p.m. Bracket Room’s Facebook page says there will be specials on wine and dessert.

At the same time, at Guarapo Lounge in Courthouse, radio hosts Sarah Fraser — another Arlington resident — is hosting a watch party of her own. Starting at 7:00 p.m., Anderson is expected to stop by for another appearance. There will be $1 tacos plus wine and cocktail specials and the chance to win prizes.

It’s unclear at which restaurant Anderson will watch Chris give out the final rose to one of the two finalists, Whitney and Becca.

Heavy rain from storm in Arlington on 7/14/14The National Weather Service has issued another Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Arlington and the D.C. area tonight.

The watch is in effect from now until 9:00 p.m. Forecasters say more storms with damaging winds and heavy downpours are possible.

Yesterday a similar watch was issued, and was followed by a storm that knocked out power to more than 5,500 Dominion customers in Arlington County.
