Wind and wind chill advisories issued for Friday

(Updated at 7:35 a.m.) Arlington will be under both a Wind Advisory and, later, a Wind Chill Advisory on Friday.

The wind is expected to whip up starting Friday morning, then temperatures will plummet throughout the day. The combination will lead to dangerous conditions for anyone outside.

To make matters worse, the strong winds — gusts of up to 50 mph are expected — may knock out power and leave some locals in the cold.

It is about to get very windy and very cold in Arlington.

The strong winds are whipping up on the tail end of the “bomb cyclone” that brought snow to the area this morning. The resulting sub-zero wind chills have prompted a Wind Chill Advisory that will be in effect tonight through midday Friday.

It’s going to be a dangerously frigid New Year’s Eve in Arlington and around the D.C. area.

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Chill Advisory, warning of sub-zero wind chills after 9 p.m. New Year’s revelers should try to avoid spending too much time outdoors tonight.

Wind chills are expected to fall below zero tonight, creating dangerous conditions for anybody spending time outside without proper clothing.

Earlier tonight, a snow squall threatened to cause problems for commuters during the evening rush hour. The squall weakened as it approached the area, and only resulted in a brief period of snow in Arlington that produced little or no delays.

Wind Chill Advisory Starts Tonight

Wind chills will drop below zero as the temperature drops and winds gust up to 35 miles per hour, according to forecasters.

The county’s Emergency Winter Shelter in Courthouse is open all day today and is expected to remain open during the day tomorrow.

A Wind Chill Advisory has been issued Arlington and the surrounding region.

The advisory is in effect starting at midnight tonight. The National Weather Service says temperatures will gradually fall throughout the day, bottoming out in the single digits tonight.

With wind gusts up to 35 miles per hour expected into tomorrow, forecasters say wind chills will reach dangerously low levels that could lead to frostbite and hypothermia.
