JUST IN: High Wind Watch Issued for Arlington

Arlington will be under a High Wind Watch starting Friday morning.

Today’s warmth will be giving way to colder weather tomorrow, and with that change will come strong winds. Gusts of up to 60 mph could down trees and tree limbs, potentially damaging structures, blocking roads and knocking out power.

UPDATED: Wind Advisory Issued for Arlington, Power Outages Reported

(Updated at 4:30 p.m.) Arlington and much of the D.C. area is now under a Wind Advisory.

The advisory is in effect until 8 p.m. Expect gusty winds of up to 50 mph between now and then, and the potential for falling tree limbs and power outages, forecasters say.

One sizable power outage was reported earlier this afternoon, in parts of North Arlington, though it’s unclear if it was caused by the windy weather.

Another outage was reported in the Clarendon and Courthouse area around 4 p.m. More than 2,000 Dominion customers lost power, according to the power company’s website, and police responded to help direct traffic at busy intersections with dark traffic signals.

Power has since been at least partially restored, according to scanner traffic.

Fallen Tree Brings Down Power Lines, Closes N. Arlington Intersection

A large tree fell amid gusty winds at the intersection of N. Old Glebe and Military road Friday afternoon, bringing down power lines and closing the intersection for an extended period of time.

Police and firefighters responded after the tree fell, though there were no initial reports of injuries nor was anyone reported struck. Tree crews are currently on scene and power crews are said to be en route.

The falling tree knocked down power lines and in turn snapped a utility pole. Just over 100 Dominion customers in the area, mostly in the Arlingwood neighborhood at the far northern tip of Arlington County, are without power.

The tree appears to have narrowly missed a stone sign for the Old Glebe neighborhood.

Dominion’s website says power is expected to be restored tonight. An Arlington Alert says the intersection is expected to remain closed overnight and drivers should seek alternate routes.

Also currently closed: a portion of N. Old Glebe Road near the Madison Community Center.

Arlington Under Wind Advisory on Friday

The National Weather Service just issued a Wind Advisory, warning of wind gusts up to 50 mph tomorrow in the D.C. area, including in Arlington. Expect downed tree limbs and some power outages, forecasters say.

Arlington Under Wind Advisory Sunday Night, Monday Morning

(Updated at 8:15 a.m.) Arlington County and much of the region is under a Wind Advisory.

The advisory was in effect Sunday night, until midnight, and is now in effect Monday from 6 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Strong winds with gusts up to 50 mph are expected, potentially resulting in downed trees, branches and power lines. Already, the National Weather Service is reporting trees down and other wind damage in Fairfax County, Montgomery County and Alexandria.

Arlington Under Flood Watch As Zeta Tracks Towards D.C. Area

Update at 12:15 p.m. — A Flood Warning has now been issued.

Earlier: Arlington and much of the region is under a Flood Watch as the remnants of Hurricane Zeta track across the South and towards the D.C. area.

Rain is expected to begin overnight and continue throughout Thursday. Around 2-3 inches of rain are expected to fall.

Zeta will also bring windy conditions, with winds of up to 30-40 mph during the peak of the storm, later in the day on Thursday. That raises the possibility of downed trees and power lines.

Zeta made landfall late Wednesday afternoon as a Category 2 hurricane, stronger than initially expected. As of 9 p.m. tonight the storm was still packing hurricane-force winds as it tears through Gulfport, Biloxi and other areas along the Gulf of Mexico. It’s expected to bring strong winds and heavy rain to Birmingham, Atlanta, Asheville, Roanoke and Richmond before reaching our region.

Portion of N. Arlington Without Power

The arrival of cold temperatures was preceded by a line of rain showers packing gusty winds that knocked out power to part of Arlington.

Portions of residential North Arlington along Lee Highway — including the Cherrydale, Waverly Hills and Donaldson Run neighborhoods — are without power as of 8:30 p.m. In all, Dominion is reporting 1,641 customers in the dark.

Video posted to social media shows dark clouds and rain arriving, as flashes from transformers can be seen in the background.

Traffic backups are being reported at the now-dark “five points” intersection on Lee Highway in Cherrydale. Police have also been dispatched to assist with traffic control on N. Quincy Street at 20th Street N., where downed utility lines have been reported.

Mother Nature, meanwhile, is not done with us yet. High winds and near-freezing temperatures are expected Saturday. From the National Weather Service:

JUST IN: Tornado Watch Issued for Arlington, D.C. Area

Arlington and most of the metropolitan D.C. area are now under a Tornado Watch.

While a Wind Advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m., the National Weather Service has added a Tornado Watch on top of it, also through 6 p.m.

Winds are expected to start whipping up this afternoon, and some tornados may spawn as a storm system makes its way through the Mid-Atlantic and up the East Coast.

JUST IN: Falling Tree Crushes Car, Closes Old Dominion Drive

(Updated at 3 p.m.) A portion of Old Dominion Drive is closed after a large free fell and landed on a passing car.

The incident happened around 1:30 p.m. just east of the intersection of Old Dominion Drive and N. Thomas Street, near Dorothy Hamm Middle School and The Horizons Apartments.

The tree fell on a car heading eastbound on Old Dominion Drive, crushing most of the frontend. The driver, who suffered minor cuts and some chest pain, told ARLnow that he did not notice the tree falling until it was too late.

“It was very shocking,” said the driver, Michael. “If I did not have my seatbelt on, we would not be talking right now.”

As of 2 p.m. the road was still closed in both directions, as VDOT crews with chainsaws, a front loader and dump trucks were working to clear the large tree from the roadway. Police are also on scene, helping to direct traffic.

Elsewhere in Arlington, there have been numerous reports of downed trees, branches and wires amid today’s gusty winds.

A tree that fell this morning near the intersection of 23rd Street S. and S. Dinwiddie Street, near Wakefield High School, closed the road and knocked out power to the neighborhood. As of 2 p.m. Dominion’s website reported 124 customers in the area were still without power, with no estimated restoration time.

A Wind Advisory remains in effect until 6 p.m.

Arlington will again be under a Wind Advisory Friday, with gusty winds expected throughout much of the day. The wind could again down tree limbs and and power lines.

Thursday’s winds caused scattered damage in Arlington, including isolated power outages and a tree that blew over and blocked part of Columbia Pike near S. Scott Street.
