UPDATED: Widespread Power Outage Reported in Arlington

Dominion power outage map Nov. 20

Update at 11:30 p.m. — Power has been mostly restored. Dominion is currently reporting only 87 customers without power in Arlington.

On a windy Sunday night, power outages are being reported around large parts of north Arlington.

The outages are so far being reported in the Virginia Square, Ballston, Cherrydale, Maywood and Donaldson Run neighborhoods.

As of 9:15 p.m. there are were 5,677 customers without power, according to Dominion’s outage map. There was no estimate as to when power might be restored.

Snow falls near Columbia PikeArlington and much of the region is under a Wind Advisory from 3-10 p.m. Saturday, and a Freeze Warning from midnight to 10 a.m. Sunday.

The National Weather Service says wind gusts up to 50 mph could cause scattered damage and freezing temperatures in the 20s could kill sensitive plants.

The one-two punch of wintry weather follows bouts of snow showers across the area this morning.

Power Outage Reported in South Arlington

Dominion power outage map 1/12/16At least 2,700 Dominion customers are without power in South Arlington tonight.

The power went out as winds whipped up in advance of a brief period of snow around 7:15 p.m. Via Twitter, one resident reported the sound of a likely transformer explosion.

The power outage is affecting residents around Nauck and other areas around S. Glebe Road, south of Columbia Pike in Arlington, and around W. Glebe Road in Alexandria. Residents of Fairlington and other nearby neighborhoods reported that power was flickering around the start of the outage but quickly came back on.

According to the Dominion website, power is expected to be restored at some point between 9 p.m. and 2 a.m.

Forecasters are warning that a strong cold front could bring snow squalls and even thundersnow to the area tonight (Saturday).

Expect dangerous, rapidly-changing conditions outside as snow, high wind and bitter cold push in from the west.

AN STRONG ARCTIC COLD FRONT WILL MOVE ACROSS THE MID-ATLANTIC THIS EVENING. THROUGH 8 PM EXPECT SNOW SHOWERS AND SQUALLS AND WINDY CONDITIONS AS THE FRONT MOVES THROUGH… ALONG WITH POSSIBLE THUNDERSNOW.

BURSTS OF HEAVY SNOW COULD PRODUCE A QUICK COATING TO AN INCH OF SNOW ACCUMULATION IN A SHORT PERIOD OF TIME. WHITEOUT CONDITIONS AND THUNDERSNOW HAVE ALREADY BEEN REPORTED IN WESTERN MARYLAND.

ROADS WILL BECOME SNOW COVERED AND SLICK THIS EVENING. ALSO… WINDS ACCOMPANYING THE SNOW SHOWERS AND SQUALLS WILL BECOME STRONG… GUSTING 40 TO 50 MPH. THE COMBINATION OF SNOW SHOWERS AND STRONG WINDS WILL LEAD TO VISIBILITIES OF ONE HALF MILE OR LESS. THESE LOW VISIBILITIES WILL DEVELOP SUDDENLY.

The National Weather Service says frigid temperatures — 15 degrees as of 7:30 a.m. — combined with wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour will make being outside potentially hazardous this morning.

Wind Advisory Today — A wind advisory is in effect from noon until midnight today. Forecasters warn of 20-30 MPH winds with potentially damaging gusts up to 50 MPH. [National Weather Service]

Body Discovered Near DCA — A woman’s body was discovered near Reagan National Airport over the weekend. The body was found in the water around where Four Mile Run flows into the Potomac. [WJLA]

School Bus Camera Law in Effect — An new ordinance that will fine drivers caught on camera passing stopped school buses is now in effect. The ordinance, which was approved by the Arlington County Board in September, calls for high resolution cameras to be installed on the “stop arms” of school buses. Fines collected as a result of the ordinance will go to Arlington Public Schools. [WTOP]

Arlington’s Approach to Housing the Homeless — Arlington County is taking a “no-silos” approach to housing the chronically homeless that ignores divisions among county agencies. Arlington has housed nearly 300 chronically homeless men and women since 2011. Officials say the cost to house each person is $22,000 per year, compared to $45,000 in jail, shelter and emergency room costs should that person stay on the streets. [Washington Post]

Storms, Heavy Rain on Tap Wednesday

An approaching cold front will bring the potential for flooding and damaging winds, according to forecasters. Some higher-elevation areas to our west are under a wind advisory starting at 6:00 tonight.

This afternoon, the National Weather Service issued the following advisory for the D.C. area.

A STRONG COLD FRONT WILL IMPACT THE REGION WEDNESDAY INTO EARLY THURSDAY. THE POTENTIAL EXISTS FOR HEAVY RAINFALL AND FLOODING ACROSS THE OUTLOOK AREA. IN ADDITION…A FEW STRONG THUNDERSTORMS CAPABLE OF PRODUCING DAMAGING WIND GUSTS WILL BE POSSIBLE WEDNESDAY AND WEDNESDAY NIGHT.

MINOR COASTAL FLOODING IS LIKELY ALONG THE WESTERN SHORE OF THE CHESAPEAKE BAY AND TIDAL POTOMAC RIVER WEDNESDAY INTO THURSDAY. MODERATE COASTAL FLOODING IS ALSO POSSIBLE AT SENSITIVE SITES WEDNESDAY AND WEDNESDAY NIGHT.
