Arlington has been largely spared from the wild weather affecting points north, west and south of here. But the possibility for dangerous storms remains.
This morning the National Weather Service extended a regional tornado watch until 3:00 p.m.

12:55 p.m. — With the exception of some isolated storminess in North Arlington, it looks like we’ve been spared from the latest batch of severe weather.
7:10 p.m. — This round of storms looks like a bust, at least for Arlington. But there are more storms to the southwest that are heading our way later tonight. The National Weather Service has extended the tornado watch for the region until 2:00 a.m.
6:40 p.m. — Storms are passing to the south and north of Arlington at the moment.
6:15 p.m. — A tornado warning has been issued for Fairfax County.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for the region.
Arlington is among the counties placed under the tornado watch until 8:00 p.m. Storms are approaching the area from the southwest.
A line of storms rolled through Arlington this afternoon, knocking down trees and power lines and generally making a soggy mess of the area’s spring blooms.
As of 7:10 p.m. there were 724 Dominion customers without power in Arlington County. Among the areas where downed trees were reported were N. Dittmar Road in the Old Glebe neighborhood and in the parking lot of an apartment complex at S. Scott Street and Columbia Pike (above).
Weather watchers report that another line of storms may impact the area in another hour or two.

The National Weather Service has issued a TORNADO WATCH for jurisdictions within the National Capital Region effective immediately. The Tornado watch is in effect until 2100 this evening (Saturday 16 April). Possible wind gusts up to 60 mph. A TORNADO WATCH means that conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes in and close to the watch area
(Updated at 2:55 p.m.) Windy, rainy weather helped bring a large tree down across S. Barton Street in Arlington Village today.
The tree crushed an unoccupied parked car, blocked S. Barton Street and damaged another tree. A tree crew is on scene removing the debris.

A line of showers and thunderstorms will be rolling through the area within the hour.
The storms are not expected to be severe, but the rain could make driving treacherous. If you’re not already at work, be cautious and take your time on the road.
The pollen count in the area was listed as ‘high’ yesterday. It’s back down to ‘moderate’ today thanks to the cool, wet weather, but many seasonal allergy sufferers are still sneezing, scratching and reaching for the pill bottle.

The National Weather Service has just issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Arlington and much of the surrounding region.
The watch is in effect until 11:00 p.m.
(Updated at 2:10 p.m.) Food trucks and carts were out in force around Welburn Square in Ballston today. With temperatures reaching into low 70s, workers flocked to the square for some spring-like outdoor dining.
The proprietors of the BBQ Bandidos truck, who continued serving their signature sandwiches and cemitas through the cold weather months, said business has picked up considerably. Across the street, a long line extended from the bright pink Curbside Cupcake truck.
Meanwhile, the broadcast team behind the Taco Carrito cart said they had just returned from their winter hibernation this week and were pleasantly surprised by demand today. The tiny two-person cart was sold out by 1:30 p.m.
Arlington will be testing its outdoor warning systems in Rosslyn, Courthouse and Pentagon City this morning.
Between 10:00 a.m. and noon, the county’s Office of Emergency Management will sound a series of three loud beeps in each area, followed by a voice broadcast in English and Spanish.
Today is Tornado Preparedness Day in Virginia, with a statewide tornado drill scheduled for 9:45 a.m. A test tornado warning will be broadcast on television and radio stations, as well as on NOAA weather radio. The period between March and May is generally considered peak tornado season.
