Police: Suspects Kick, Spit on First Responders

Police car (file photo)A police officer and a paramedic were trying to assist a drunk woman early Sunday morning when the woman kicked the officer to the ground and kicked the medic in the face.

The incident happened just past 12:30 a.m. in Clarendon. The woman, a 21-year-old Fredericksburg resident, is now facing multiple charges.

From an Arlington County Police Department crime report:

ASSAULT ON POLICE, 160626002, 3100 block of Wilson Boulevard. At approximately 12:37 a.m. on June 26, officers responded to assist medics with a heavily intoxicated female. Upon arrival, the suspect became combative towards officers and medics. She was able to get her legs free and kick an officer to the ground and a medic in the face. Clara Sigman, 21, of Fredericksburg VA, was arrested and charged with assault on police, assault on firefighter, and drunk in public.

On Friday afternoon another officer was assaulted, this time on the 2100 block of Washington Blvd, home of Arlington’s Dept. of Human Services.

A 35-year-old woman spit on an officer who responded to the scene for a report of another assault that had just occurred. From ACPD:

ASSAULT ON POLICE, 160624051, 2100 block of S. Washington Boulevard. At approximately 3:39 p.m. on June 24, police were dispatched to the report of an assault that had just occurred. When on scene officers instructed the female subject to comply, she spit on the officer’s face. Senait Taye, 35, of Arlington VA, was arrested and charged with assault on police and assault and battery.

Woman Wakes Up to Find Slipper-Wearing Man Stealing Stuff from Her Hotel Room

Police car (file photo)A woman who was staying in a hotel along Columbia Pike woke up early Monday morning to find a burglar in her room.

Police say the man stole items from the woman’s suitcase, in a room at the Sheraton hotel near the Air Force Memorial.

The burglar was reportedly wearing slippers at the time of the crime.

From an Arlington County Police crime report:

LATE BURGLARY, 160615013, 900 block of S. Orme Street. Between 4:10 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. on June 15, a female victim awoke to a male suspect entering her hotel room. She observed him steal objects from her suitcase and then flee when she confronted him. The suspect is described as a black male in his twenties, approximately 5’8″ tall and weighed 160 lbs. He was wearing a gray shirt, orange/khaki shorts, and slippers.

ACPD Arrests Two Purse Snatching Suspects in Clarendon

Police car (file photo)Arlington County Police have arrested two men for forcibly stealing purses from two women in the Clarendon area.

The incident happened just after 2 a.m. Sunday on the 2600 block of Clarendon Blvd, less than a block from the Whole Foods.

“Two female victims were walking in the area when three male subjects approached them from behind, shoved them to the ground, and took their purses,” according to an ACPD crime report. “The female victims, as well as witnesses, were able to provide police with detailed descriptions of the subjects.”

“Officers in the area identified two subjects matching the descriptions,” the crime report continued. “Christopher Reed, 29, of Alexandria VA, and Justin Payne, 28, of Springfield VA, were charged with robbery and held on no bond. The investigation into the third subject is ongoing.”

Police: Man Grabbed Woman’s Underwear in Virginia Square

Police car (file photo)A woman walking down the street in Virginia Square Wednesday night was grabbed by a stranger who reached underneath her dress.

The man grabbed the woman’s underwear, then fled the scene. A police dog attempted to track the suspect down but lost his scent.

From an Arlington County Police crime report:

SEXUAL BATTERY, 160525052, 3800 block of N. Fairfax Drive. At approximately 10:45 p.m., a female victim was walking down the street when an unknown male subject reached his hand underneath her dress and grabbed her underwear. The subject fled the scene on foot and a K9 track in the area was negative. The subject is described at a black male, 20-30 years old, approximately 6ft tall with an average build.

Also Wednesday evening, a 19-year-old Arlington man was charged with being drunk in public, having a fake ID and attempting to bribe the officer who was taking him to jail.

ATTEMPT TO COMMIT BRIBERY OF A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER, 160525042, 4900 block of N. Lee Highway. At approximately 5:27 p.m., officers were dispatched to the report of an intoxicated male subject. When the officers arrived, the subject provided them with a false identification. During transport to booking, the subject became agitated and offered to pay the officer to allow him to leave without charges. Ryan McNulty, 19, of Arlington VA was charged with Attempt to Commit Bribery, Possession of a Fictitious license (x2), Provide False ID to Avoid Arrest, Underage Consumption of Alcohol and Drunk in Public.

Police: Men Arrested After Stealing iPads from Elementary School

Police car (file photo)Arlington County Police say they arrested two men who tried to steal electronics from a local elementary school.

The incident happened just after 2 a.m., early Saturday morning, at Long Branch Elementary School on N. Fillmore Street in Lyon Park.

According to police, an officer patrolling the area noticed the men creeping around the school with flashlights and then going inside via an “unsecured” door. By the time the suspects left the school, with Apple iPad tablets in hand, more officers had arrived and they were taken into custody, said ACPD.

The men, both Arlington residents in their early 20s, were charged with burglary and grand larceny. From the ACPD crime report:

BURGLARY, 160521007, unit block of N. Fillmore Street. At approximately 2:10 a.m. on May 21, an officer working in the area observed suspicious persons. He observed the individuals shining flashlights towards the school and enter through an unsecured door. Officers confronted the individuals upon their exit from the school. The suspects fled but were ultimately apprehended and determined to be in possession of Apple Ipads. Dvonte Medious-Jackson, 21, of Arlington VA, was charged with burglary and grand larceny. James Minor, 22, of Arlington VA, was charged with burglary and grand larceny.

Man With Gun Robs Columbia Pike Store

Police cars outside of Department of Human Services (file photo)A man armed with a semi-automatic handgun robbed a store on Columbia Pike during yesterday’s evening rush hour.

The robbery happened around 5:20 p.m., according to police, at a dollar store-type retailer on the 5000 block of Columbia Pike.

“An unknown male subject brandished a firearm at an employee and demanded cash from the cash register,” according to the Arlington County Police crime report. “The suspect fled the scene on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.”

The suspect is described as “a black male in his thirties, approximately 6’0″ tall and… 180 lbs.” He was wearing an orange long sleeve shirt, blue pants, a black mask and latex gloves, according to the crime report and scanner traffic.

Nauck Apartment Residents Demand Better Living Conditions

The Shelton apartment building (photo via AHC, Inc.)Residents of The Shelton apartment building in Nauck are speaking out about what they say are poor and unsafe living conditions at the affordable apartment complex.

The four-story building, at 3215 24th Street S., was built in 2009 and has 94 committed affordable apartments. There’s also a community center, landscaped courtyard with a play area and underground parking.

A letter signed by 19 residents alleges “poor and disrespectful customer service,” “harassment of residents by staff” and — most pointedly — problems with drug dealing and usage in and around the building, chronic loitering and a pest infestation.

“The Shelton was built and operates using public funds, but is not accountable to the residents or the community,” the letter says. “Our living conditions continue to deteriorate… It is not always a safe place for us or our children to live. Security currently in place is not adequate.”

“As residents we have a right to live in a building that is well maintained, welcoming and secure,” the letter continues. “We need dedicated staffing and security personnel on these premises that will work with us as tenants… Safety and security at the Shelton should be a priority for management and on-site staff.”

Arlington County Police Department records show that there were 125 calls for service to the apartment building between May 1, 2015 and today. While high, we’re told that’s not an excessive number for a large, multi-family building. The top four types of police calls to the building were for domestic incidents, noise complaints, trespassing and disorderly conduct.

Arlington-based AHC, which owns and manages The Shelton, has organized a community meeting in response to the letter, a spokeswoman told ARLnow.com this afternoon. That meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, May 18 at 6 p.m. at the building’s community room. It will “discuss any concerns [residents] may have” and provide “an update on the steps we have taken over the last several months to rectify several issues.”

AHC says trash areas in the building are now being checked daily and extra trash collection days have been scheduled to help address the pest problem. Also, adjustments are being made to correct inaccurate utility bills that were sent to some residents.

To address the safety issue, an automated system asking loiterers to “please move on” was recently installed near the 7-Eleven store and the automatic front door now prevents individuals from holding it open indefinitely. AHC says the building currently has 32 security cameras.

“AHC has deep roots in the Nauck community,” said AHC Communications Manager Celia Slater. “We are dedicated to working with local organizations like the Nauck Civic Association and the Bonder and Amanda Johnson Community Development Corporation. We continue to partner with Arlington County and other groups to help move forward plans for the Nauck neighborhood revitalization.”

Police: Man Held Knife to Woman’s Neck

Arlington County police carA 21-year-old Arlington man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after police say he held a knife to the neck of a woman following a fight.

The incident happened around 1 p.m. in the Arlington Mill neighborhood, near Columbia Pike.

The victim, who was either a friend or family member of the suspect, suffered a cut to her hand and was transported to Virginia Hospital Center for treatment.

MALICIOUS WOUNDING, 160510024, 800 block of S. Greenbrier Street. At approximately 1:00 p.m. on May 10, following a verbal altercation between known subjects, a male subject grabbed the female victim by her hair and held a knife to her neck. The victim suffered a minor laceration to her hand and was transported to Virginia Hospital Center with non-life threatening injuries. Darbin Barrera Corado, 21, of Arlington VA, was charged with malicious wounding and is being held without bond.

Crime Report: Woman Slaps Cop in Shirlington

Police car (file photo)An Arlington woman was arrested early Sunday morning after police say she slapped an officer on the 2800 block of S. Randolph Street, in Shirlington.

Police say they originally responded to the scene because the woman, who was allegedly drunk at the time, was “attempting to regain entry into a restaurant” after it closed.

From the crime report:

ASSAULT ON POLICE, 160508009, 2800 block of S. Randolph Street. At approximately 1:40 a.m. on May 8, officers responded to the report of an intoxicated individual attempting to regain entry into a restaurant. While the officers were speaking with the subject she became combative and slapped one of the officers in the face. Debra Mae Edwards, 39, of Arlington Va, was charged with assault on police and drunk in public.

Crime Report: Man Arrested For Masturbating Near Two People, Then Chasing Them

Police car (file photo)(Updated on 12/23/21 at 11:15 a.m.) Police arrested a man who allegedly masturbated near two people, then chased them down S. Walter Reed Drive early this morning.

A man and a woman spotted [name redacted], 24, masturbating on the 900 block of S. Walter Reed Drive around 3:55 a.m. this morning, authorities said. The man approached the victims, had a “brief conversation,” then began to chase them, according to police. The man and woman eventually outran [redacted], and officers arrested him a short time later.

From an ACPD crime report:

MASTURBATING IN PUBLIC, 160427006, 900 block of S. Walter Reed Drive. At approximately 3:55 a.m. on April 27, a male and female victim witnessed a male subject masturbating in public. The subject approached the victims and they had a brief conversation. The subject then began to chase the victims until they eventually lost sight of him. Officers conducted a search around the area and located the subject. [redacted], 24, of Arlington VA, was charged with masturbating in public and was held on a secured bond.

Police are also on the lookout for a man who grabbed a woman’s buttocks late last night:

SEXUAL BATTERY, 160426061, 800 block of N. Pollard Street. At approximately 10:45 p.m. on April 26, a female victim advised that her buttocks was grabbed by an unknown male subject as he passed her on the street. The suspect is described as a black male in his 20-30’s, approximately 6’0″ tall and weighed 180 lbs. He was wearing a white t-shirt and tan pants at the time of the incident.

Additionally, authorities are searching for a burglar who forced his way into a locked storage area:

LATE BURGLARY, 160426019, 1000 block of N. Fillmore Street. At approximately 10:00 p.m. on April 19, an unknown male subject forced entry into a locked storage area and stole numerous items. The suspect is described as a white male, 30-50 years old. He was wearing a light colored shirt and long pants.

Tip Leads to Arrest of Suspected Argumentative Face-Slasher

Calderon, Ramon mugshot (photo courtesy ACPD))A police tip earlier this month led to the arrest of a man suspected of slashing another man in the face after an argument last June, police announced this morning.

According to the authorities, a tip received through Arlington County Crime Solvers led to the arrest of 24-year-old Ramon Calderon on April 14.

Calderon is suspected of brandishing a pocket knife, then cutting another man across the face at the Gunston Middle School soccer fields in June. The attack caused “a fairly large laceration,” on the victim’s face according to police, and resulted in significant bleeding due to a cut minor artery. The man was rushed to George Washington University Hospital, where he received 60 stitches.

Police said last June that the two men were arguing about the “worth and importance of a college education” before the attack, but they did not specify whether the suspect was arguing for or against the value of higher education.
