From this week’s Arlington County Police Department crime report we highlight this case of a man who was shot near the Green Valley Pharmacy during an argument.

Police were first alerted to the shooting when the man was dropped off at the Virginia Hospital Center ER with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg. After a short investigation, police were able to find and arrest the suspect — which wasn’t too hard because he was still hanging out near where the shooting occurred.

MALICIOUS WOUNDING-ARREST 05/10/10, 2400 block of S. Shirlington Road. On May 9 at 11:50 pm, two men argued and one man shot the other in the leg. Police located the suspect. Michael Nash, 57, of no fixed address was charged with Malicious Wounding, Use of a Firearm in Commission of a Felony, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted felon. He was held without bond.

This week’s Arlington crime report is especially long, but that’s just because it details incidents from the past two weeks (as opposed to the normal one).

The report includes the bank robbery and the armored truck robbery that we reported on the Friday before last.

It also features the intriguing case of a man who allegedly broke into a business in Ballston and started whipping up a meal:

BURGLARY-ARREST 04/30/10, 4100 block of Fairfax Drive. Between 4:30 pm on April 29, and 6 am on April 30, a person entered a business and cooked food. The suspect was located by police and arrested. Clifford Robinson, 27, of Burke, was charged with Burglary. He was held on a $5,000 bond.

If you’re drunk and next to a police station, and you assault a police officer, it’s not going to end very well for you. If you’re drunk and being thrown out of a bar, and you bite a security guard, well, that’s probably not going to end well for most people, except this one guy who had a getaway car at the ready.

ASSAULT ON POLICE-ARREST 04/18/10, 2000 block of N. 15th Street. On April 18 at 4:30 am, an officer was assaulted by an intoxicated female. Ellen ******, 26, of Silver Spring, MD, was charged with Assault on Law Enforcement and Drunk in Public. She was held on a $5,000 bond.

MALICIOUS WOUNDING 04/18/10, 2600 block of Columbia Pike. On April 18 at 9:30 pm, an intoxicated subject bit a security guard as he was being escorted from a bar. The suspect fled the scene in a vehicle. The suspect is described as a white Hispanic male in his late 20’s, 5’9″ and 200 lbs. He was wearing all black clothing.

The past week saw three people — the oldest of whom was 25 — arrested for alleged crimes that are straight out of the video game “Grand Theft Auto.” Despite the fact that the other two suspects are mere kids, which is its own special brand of audacity, the chutzpah award goes to the guy who police say got drunk, stole a Dominion Power utility truck, crashed it and tried to flee the scene.

GRAND LARCENY AUTO/HIT AND RUN-ARREST 04/07/10, 5200 block of N. 12th Street. On April 7 at 8 pm, a teenage suspect stole a vehicle and was then involved in a minor traffic accident. Officers apprehended the suspect and he was detained.

GRAND LARCENY AUTO-ARREST 04/09/10, I-395 South at Boundary Channel Drive. On April 9 at 8 pm, a juvenile male was found driving a stolen vehicle. He was detained.

GRAND LARCENY AUTO-ARREST 04/10/10, 700 block of N. Randolph Street. On April 10 at 3:20 am, a man was seen stealing a power truck, crashing it, and then fleeing the scene. Arlington’s violent crime rate fell 8.3 percent in 2009, the Arlington County Police Department announced this afternoon. The overall crime rate dropped by 3.7 percent.

There were four homicides in 2009, compared to two in 2008. There has been one homicide (for which an arrest has been made) so far this year.

There were 15 rapes in 2009, compared to 23 the year prior, a 35 percent decrease

There were 319 burglaries last year, an 18 percent decrease versus 2008.

There were also 297 vehicles reported stolen in 2009. Vehicle theft in Arlington County has not been that low since the early 1960’s.

“This is very good news for our community,” said Arlington County board chairman Jay Fisette. “In these tough economic times, to see a drop in the overall crime rate, and a significant drop in the violent crime rate, is more evidence that Arlington is a safe place to live — and getting safer.”

“Our officers have accomplished a great deal in the past year combating crime in Arlington and receive notable support from the community,” police chief M. Douglas Scott said. “We continue to enjoy a close working relationship with the community to increase awareness and the practice of good crime prevention strategies.”

Just about every day police get called to at least one reported shoplifting at the Pentagon City mall. Often, police make several trips to the mall in any given day. Security personnel, it seems, are extraordinarily skilled at catching thieves.

But the guards aren’t quite as used to suspects turning violent. Thus this item in this week’s Arlington County Police Department crime report is noteworthy:

ROBBERY 03/27/10, 1400 block of S. Hayes Street. On March 27 at 3 pm, two suspects stole items from a department store. When they were stopped by security, they assaulted the guard and implied that they had a knife. The suspects were both African American males in their 40’s. The first suspect was 5’8″-5’9″, 175 lbs, and was wearing tan pants, a navy hooded sweatshirt and black and white sneakers. The second suspect was 5’10”, 200 lbs. wearing dark blue jeans and a black peacoat.

Of all the places to steal from, someone apparently decided to break into the Arlington Forest United Methodist church last Thursday to swipe some cash. From the latest Arlington Police Department crime report:

BURGLARY 03/11/10, 4700 block of Arlington Boulevard. On March 11 between 3 pm and 6:30 pm, an unknown person forcibly entered a church and stole currency. There are no known suspects.

That’s just one of the brazen acts contained in the this week’s report, which also mentions the arrest in the Lyon Park homicide case and the remarkably long list of larcenies from auto.

A common theme has emerged from the Arlington Police Department’s daily crime reports. Thieves have been targeting parked cars in Arlington, breaking into multiple vehicles on the same block with surprising regularity.

The location of the crimes has varied, as has the type of items taken from the vehicles. Wheels, GPS navigation units, even coins have been reported stolen.

Yesterday alone the police department reported a total of eight auto break-ins.

At least 23 “larcenies from auto” have been reported since the first of the month, according to public figures. The police department only reports instances in which multiple cars were broken into by the same suspect or suspects, leaving the possibility that the actual number of auto break-ins is significantly higher.

However, police tell us the rate of break-ins is “pretty normal.”

It’s worth noting that 12 cars and motorcycles were reported stolen during the same period.

A man was stabbed and a gas station was held up over the weekend in Arlington, according to this week’s Arlington County Police Department crime report. An arrest was made in the stabbing, but the armed robbery suspect is still at large.

ROBBERY 03/07/10, 5600 block of Lee Highway. On March 7 at 11 pm, an unknown man entered a gas station displaying a handgun. He demanded money and received it before fleeing the store. The suspect was an African American male in his mid-20’s, 5’8″ to 5″10″ and 190 lbs. He was wearing all black clothing and was unshaven.

Also included in this week’s report is the series of indecent exposure incidents on the W&OD trail that we’ve been reporting.
