Arcing Insulator Causes Metro Delays — An arcing insulator in the tunnel between Rosslyn and Foggy Bottom caused some Metrorail delays this morning. Arlington County firefighters responded to the track fire, which occurred around 6 a.m. [WUSA 9]

New Bus Lanes Open in Crystal City — A ribbon cutting ceremony was held Sunday for Arlington’s portion of the Crystal City Potomac Yard Transitway, the region’s first bus rapid transit system. The system’s 1.5 miles of bus-only lanes that run through Crystal City are now open and serving riders. Cars that use the lanes during rush hour face a $200 ticket. [WTOP]

Gutshall Out-Raises Garvey, Speaks at Board Meeting — Erik Gutshall, who’s challenging incumbent Libby Garvey for the Democratic Arlington County Board nomination, raised almost $52,000 during the most recent quarter, while Garvey raised about $34,600. Garvey still maintains a cash on hand advantage, however. Gutshall, meanwhile, spoke at Saturday’s County Board meeting and called for the Board to do more to oppose the gun store in Lyon Park. Wardian Running Boston Marathon Today — Elite runner Michael Wardian is among the many Arlington residents competing in the Boston Marathon today. The 42-year-old, known for his prolific pace of race running, has been particularly prolific as of late — so much so that his international adventures recently prompted him to get his passport expanded. Board Approves Car2Go, Google Proposals — The County Board on Saturday approved a proposal to allow the Car2Go car sharing program to operate seamlessly between Arlington and D.C. (approval is still needed from the District). The Board also voted to join Google’s Connected Citizens Program, which facilitates the sharing of traffic and road condition data. Van Doren, Talento Endorsed By Education Association — The political action committee of the Arlington Education Association, which represents local teachers, has endorsed incumbent Nancy Van Doren and newcomer Tannia Talento in the race for the Democratic School Board endorsement. [InsideNova]

Arlington Man Found Dead in Canal — Police have identified the man found floating dead in the C&O Canal in Georgetown as 51-year-old Arlington resident Osbaldo Lemus Bernal. So far, his death has not been deemed suspicious. [DCist, Patch]

Gutshall Steps Up Campaign Against Garvey — Planning Commission member and County Board hopeful Erik Gutshall is stepping up the rhetoric against his Democratic primary opponent, County Board member Libby Garvey. Gutshall, in an email, called Garvey a “failed… career politician.” At an event last night he blasted her tenure on the School Board — saying she did not do enough to address the school system’s capacity crisis — and her alleged lack of effort in addressing transit issues along Columbia Pike, following the cancellation of the streetcar project. Gutshall Wins Straw Poll Landslide — Those attending Del. Alfonso Lopez’s (D) second annual straw poll event on Columbia Pike last night favored Erik Gutshall over Libby Garvey in a landslide. One could argue that the event was attended by a select group of Democrats pre-disposed to oppose Garvey, but Gutshall captured 88 percent of the vote to Garvey’s 12 percent. The straw poll also asked attendees about the School Board race (Nancy Van Doren – 46%, Tannia Talento – 35%, Michael Shea – 11%, Chaz Crismon – 7%) and the Democratic presidential nomination (Hillary Clinton – 77%, Bernie Sanders – 23%).

Registration Open for Rosslyn Social Event — Registration is now open for City Social, Rosslyn’s annual meeting. District Taco Gets New Neighbor — The new District Taco in Rosslyn will soon have a new neighbor at 1500 Wilson Blvd. A Wells Fargo bank is “coming soon” to a next-door ground floor retail space. There is an existing Wells Fargo branch down the street at 1300 Wilson Blvd. A branch in Courthouse recently closed. A bank spokeswoman did not respond to a request for comment. [Twitter]

Scaled-Down Long Bridge Aquatics Center Proposed — Arlington County Manager Mark Schwartz last night proposed a scaled-down version of the Long Bridge Park aquatics center. The original aquatics center design was shelved before it could be built due to construction estimates and an operating budget that were higher than expected. [InsideNova]

Congressional Delegation Writes to NPS Director — Arlington’s congressional delegation — Sen. Mark Warner, Sen. Tim Kaine and Rep. Don Beyer — has written to National Park Service Director Jonathan Jarvis, urging him to make sure NPS applies for a “FASTLANE” grant for reconstruction of the decaying Memorial Bridge, before the April 14 application deadline. ‘WeLive’ in Crystal City is ‘Beta Testing,’ Preparing for May Opening

WeLive, the residential venture from co-working company WeWork, has been getting lots of national press attention this week.

Most of that attention has been focused on WeLive’s recently-opened lower Manhattan location. But the company has a second location, here in Arlington, that’s preparing to officially open in just a few weeks.

WeLive Crystal City, located in the floors below WeWork at 2221 S. Clark Street, is currently home to some intrepid “beta testers.” The space will be “formally launching” in “early May,” the company told ARLnow.com earlier this week.

WeLive has been compared to college dormitory life, with its shared, furnished living spaces — each with “beds and couches, towels and linens, and everything in between,” plus a bathroom and kitchen — and array of planned social activities. But private apartments with three or more bedrooms are also offered.

Other features include premium cable, HDTVs, high speed Wi-fi, a laundry room, a communal chef’s kitchen, a yoga studio, a full-time community concierge and housekeeping team and “all the coffee, tea, and beer you can drink.”

“WeLive is a new way of living built upon community, flexibility, and a fundamental belief that we are only as good as the people we surround ourselves with,” WeLive says on its website. “We know life is better when we are part of a community that believes in something larger than itself. From mailrooms and laundry rooms that double as bars and event spaces to communal kitchens, roof decks, and hot tubs, WeLive challenges traditional apartment living through physical spaces that foster meaningful relationships.”

The Crystal City WeLive is offering pricing well below that of the Manhattan location, at least through the end of April. A bed in a shared living space starts at $875 per month, while a private unit starts at $1,795 per month.

Dispatch: Man Can’t See After Smoking Marijuana for the First Time

MarijuanaArlington County police and paramedics responded to an unusual call at a Crystal City apartment building yesterday evening.

Around 5 p.m., a man who claimed to have just smoked marijuana for the first time called 911 and said he couldn’t see and was having difficulty breathing.

He was evaluated by medics and voluntarily handed over the pot to police, according to scanner traffic.

Authorities were a bit skeptical about part of his claim, however. It was noted that the same guy — or, at least, someone at the same apartment — had called 911 on March 28 and reported breathing troubles after smoking weed for the first time.

Jon Stewart to Emcee USO Event in Arlington

Jon Stewart (photo via Wikipedia)Former Daily Show host Jon Stewart will serve as the co-emcee for a star-studded USO event in Crystal City this month.

The USO of Metropolitan Washington-Baltimore is holding its 34th annual awards dinner on Tuesday, April 19 at the Renaissance Arlington Capital View hotel. The event will mark the USO’s 75th anniversary and will honor people and organizations that have “made a significant contributions to our country’s military community.”

Honorees and special guests expected at the event include WWE Superstar John Cena, NASCAR hall of famer Richard Petty, “Jackass” star Jason “Wee Man” Acuna, Korn lead singer Jonathan Davis and Medal of Honor recipient Florent Groberg.

Musical performances by Tony Orlando, the 82nd Airborne Chorus and Miss America 2016 Betty Cantrell, among others, are also planned.

Road Closures Planned for Crystal City 5K Fridays

Crystal City 5K runners (photo by Diltch1)Crystal City’s 5K Fridays will kick off on Friday and a number of road and lane closures are planned to accommodate the race.

There will be five 5Ks in Crystal City in April — on April 1, 8, 15, 22, 29. The start time for each is 6:30 p.m.

Arlington County Police officers will set up the following road closures from about 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. for the race.

  • Northbound lanes of Crystal Drive between 26th Street and 12th Street
  • North and southbound lanes of Long Bridge Drive, plus traffic around 6th, 10th, and Ball Streets

The southbound lanes of Crystal Drive will remain open during the race.

“In addition to the closures, street parking in the area will be restricted,” ACPD said. “Motorists should be on the lookout for temporary ‘No Parking’ signs. Illegally parked vehicles may be ticketed or towed. If your vehicle is towed from a public street, call 703-558-2222.”

Registration is still open, for $20 per race or $75 for the entire series.

The course is flat with long straightaways. Course records were set in 2011 (15:10, men) and 2014 (16:53, women).

Crystal City Farmers Market and Other Seasonal Events Returning Soon

Crystal City Farmers MarketSpring has sprung and Crystal City is gearing up to take full advantage of the warming weather.

On Tuesday, April 5, the Crystal City FRESHFARM Market will open for the season. The farmers market is held from 3-7 p.m. every Tuesday, along Crystal Drive between 18th and 20th Streets S.

“Shop from nearly 20 local farmers and producers with seasonal fruits and vegetables, fresh-cut flowers, container plants and herbs, farm-raised eggs, all-natural meats, artisan baked goods, specialty foods and much more,” organizer Crystal City BID said in a press release. “Stop by early and pick-up a free Crystal City banner bag from the market’s information table (while supplies last).”

Two days later, the BID will hold its first Food Truck Thursday of the season. The lunchtime event is held on Thursdays from 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., and features a flotilla of food trucks in two locations: the corner of 18th Street and Crystal Drive and at 12th Street and Long Bridge Drive.

Also coming soon to Crystal City: the first 5K Friday race of April, this coming Friday (April 1), and the neighborhood’s weekly Mobile Bike Repair Station will open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, at the corner of 18th and Crystal.

Crystal City isn’t the only local community with seasonal events and amenities that have opened or are opening soon. Among the others:

Experts: No D.C. Real Estate Bubble — Most experts in a recent Zillow-sponsored survey said there is no significant risk of a real estate bubble in the D.C. region, at least over the next five years. However, a significant portion of experts do believe other hot markets, like San Francisco and Miami, may be at risk of a bubble. Lane Closures For Crystal City Project — On-street parking, bike lanes and the outside travel lane are currently blocked off on both sides of 18th Street S. between S. Buyers Found for Market Common — A pair of buyers has reportedly been found for the Market Common mixed-use development in Clarendon. Regency Centers and AvalonBay are said to be partnering to buy the shopping center and apartment complex for $410 million. [GlobeSt.com]

Lyon Park Gun Store Opens — After a month of controversy, Nova Armory opened its doors on Saturday, with dozens of gun enthusiasts showing up to support the store. In a rally nearby, local lawmakers urged residents to continue the fight against the store, but said that due to Virginia law there was nothing else they could legally do to prevent the shop from opening. Teen Employment Expo Scheduled — Teens seeking summer jobs and employers seeking seasonal help will be meeting next month at Arlington’s 2016 Teen Summer Expo.
