Arlington County’s Parks & Recreation department has a 55+ Pass and 55+ Gold Pass that provide access to local programs and facilities at heavily-discounted rates. Well here we are, parents: The end of July is upon us.

Just like any other season around here, it’s been interesting weather-wise.

In addition to sweltering temps, parts of our area experienced the absolute worst in terms of flooding recently. This included a state of emergency declaration in Arlington County just two weeks ago.

Ideally, folks were prepared before these torrential storms. But, if not, there is no time like the present to get ready, safety-and insurance-wise at a minimum, for the next round.

Spring cleaning gets all the love.

But, guess what? You can do a little summer cleaning, too. Before we all know it, these swampy temps will be a thing of the past and we’ll be on to cool fall temps and Old Man Winter.

So, before the leaves and temps change, here are a couple of quick tips for July:

  • Now is not the time to let the weeds grow wild. This is a year-round rule, but especially ahead of fall, you’re not going to want to rake through a jungle.
  • How are those gutters looking? Make sure to clear out all of your gutters. Heck, you might even find a leaf (or 100) that fell during fall of last year.
  • Change your air conditioning filter. You should be doing this every 90 days (every 60 days if you have a pet!), so there’s no time like the present.

Happy birthday, America!

Tomorrow our great land turns 243 years-old and, living at the doorstep of our nation’s capital, we have awesome access to enjoy so many uber-patriotic things. Among those things: prime viewing spots for Fourth of July fireworks.

Among my personal favorite spots to check out the annual fireworks extravaganza are the Marine Corps War Memorial and the Air Force Memorial. Both of these Arlington spots are so unique to our area and pay tribute to those who made this 243rd birthday possible.

Pro-tip: If you plan to head to either spot, just make sure you plan your travel accordingly, as there will surely be road closures and traffic will be hectic.

Today is National Canoe Day. By now, you know that I love a random holiday, but this one actually carries some timely local importance.

Last week, the Rosslyn boathouse project crossed another important hurdle in coming to life. The proposed boathouse will bring access to the Potomac much more seamless for Arlingtonians, boasting a 14,000 square-foot facility, 300-foot long dock and more. So, if you love kayaking, canoeing and/or water activities, you may no longer have to venture to Georgetown for water access.

The Northern Virginia Association of Realtors is feeling pretty bullish about home prices this year. How bullish, you ask?

Well, according to a June 12 press release, the organization has updated its 2019 forecast, projecting median prices of homes to increase by 17.2 percent this year in Arlington County. Its prior forecast projected a year-over-year increase of 5.1 percent.
